Tools Change. Good Judgement Doesn’t.

Every year brings a new shortcut

I’ve been designing and building websites since 2000. In that time I’ve watched Flash come and go, seen WordPress take over a huge slice of the web, and lost count of the tools promising a professional website in five minutes.

Each one made part of the job quicker. None of them changed what makes a website work.

What actually makes a website work

A good website isn’t a pile of pages. It’s a series of decisions. Who is it for? What do they need to know before they get in touch? What will make them trust you, and what should they see first on a small screen when they’re in a hurry?

There’s no template answer to any of that. The answers come from listening to you, understanding your customers and knowing, from years of doing it, which choices win enquiries and which ones quietly lose them.

Design is still a craft

I learnt typography, layout and visual hierarchy in print, designing magazines and catalogues where every millimetre counted. I bring the same care to every screen I design.

You feel good design before you notice it. The page is calm and clear. You find what you came for straight away. You believe the business behind it. That doesn’t happen by accident, and it doesn’t come out of a box.

Where modern tools fit

I use modern tools every day, and some of them use AI. They’re good at the repetitive parts of the job: setting projects up, checking code, testing pages on dozens of screen sizes. That gives me more time for the work clients actually hire me for.

What tools can’t do is know your business. They can’t judge what your customers will respond to, and they don’t take responsibility when something needs fixing. I do.

Why judgement matters more than ever

When anyone can produce a page of passable copy or a decent-looking layout in seconds, the hard part is no longer making something. It’s knowing whether it’s right. Is that claim true? Will that headline make sense to your customers? Does the page answer the question they actually came with?

That takes critical thinking and judgement, and they matter more now than at any point in my career. A tool gives you an answer every time, delivered with the same confidence whether it’s right or wrong. Someone has to question it, check it against what they know and decide. I treat everything a tool produces as a first draft, never a finished answer.

Technology will keep moving, and I’ll keep using whatever does the job best. But clients don’t come back to me for the tools. They come back because I listen, I sweat the details and I tell them honestly what will work.
